John studied Architecture and then trained as a stonemason before gaining his tertiary qualifications. He is currently Head Teacher of a secondary senior college art faculty, and enjoys a balance of teaching and making his own sculpture. He has been a sculptor for over forty years and is represented in public and private collections.
He works mainly with sandstone, marble, timber, bronze and combinations of these materials. He finds that these materials are the best media for his ideas which are concerned with our relationship with nature, environmental issues, and the human condition. However he can branch out into other areas, especially cultural comments regarding religion, politics and gender. In these areas, he often uses humour, satire and parody to open up communication with the audience.

John greatly admires sculptors of the Baroque period and their expressive visual language and craft skills. He believes that good, sustainable art always has a craft component that shows the hand of the artist and the humanist approach opening up a relationship with the audience and constructing meaning. John strives to combine concept with the nature of materials with neither becoming dominant. It’s all about balance.

John works in his studio at home in a rural environment north of Sydney. His studio comprises a gallery and indoor workshop and an outdoor open-air studio with overhead crane for stone carving. He uses a combination of hand tools and power tools often starting with the hand tool approach early in the process to gain a feel for the material and to allow some spontaneity.

John is available for large or small commissions of indoor or outdoor sculpture. All purchases and commissions include site or placement advice, delivery and installation within 100 km of Sydney.
John’s studio and gallery at Lisarow on the NSW Central Coast can be visited by arrangement.
